I’ve always been fascinated with teas, how different teas taste, what scents they give off, what colors they have. Throughout my life, I’ve been surrounded by this tea-drinking routine. It started with my family, and when I was in high school, I enjoyed this beverage with my friends and family.
Over time, I’ve tried many types of teas. I started thinking how I could blend different aromatic qualities together and make even more exquisite-tasting teas.
The Pyramid of Tea
I’ve developed a process for blending tea. Imagine a pyramid. Its base is the widest. So, I blend my teas in exactly that way. The biggest portion of the blend will be the ingredient for the base. I prepare that ingredient in the largest amount and then just add small amounts of other ingredients.
Choose the herb for the base and gather its leaves. This will be a primary or basic herb. If you are wondering what the primary herb should be, then think about your personal taste. According to your preferences, you’ll choose a herb that you consider to have most pleasing aroma. If you want harsher and bolder aromas, then use black tea as your base herb. You might opt for green tea if you seek health benefits or maybe weight loss. When you decide, gather the leaves in large amount as a primary herb. If you cannot decide, then brew several different teas using separate tea cups. Smell the teas, look at their colors and drink from each cup. You will notice differences. Some will be subtle while other will be very obvious. That’s the best way to decide which types you like the least and the most.
Once you gathered a large amount of the basic herb, it’s time to have fun experimenting. You can start by adding really small amounts to the base and see how the aromatic quality changes. You can add anything from fruits, spices, to different herbs. Think – peppermint, ginger, cherries, cinnamon, coconut, berries, oranges, cacao, honey and many more! Keep mixing until you find combinations that have the most appealing aromas. Then you can package these herbs combined in little bags and store them.
Practice and Patience
Remember that discovering which herbs, flowers, fruits and spices to together, takes practice and time. For instance, green tea as a base ingredient creates great aroma when combined with mint, lemongrass and ginger. Black tea becomes even more flavorful with peppercorns, cacao, or vanilla beans as secondary ingredients. If you are a fan of Rooibos, make it a base and try combining it with coconut, peppermint, rose petals, saffron and more.
